AI voice cloning scams and the family safe word

They can copy a voice. They can't copy a word your family picked at the kitchen table.

By Chris Taylor, Taylor Family Software. Updated .

Short answerPick a family safe word in person and never write it in a text or post. If someone calls in a panic asking for money, ask for the word. No word, hang up and call them back on the number you already have.

The call comes late. It's your grandson's voice, crying. He's been in a wreck, or arrested, and he needs money right now, and please don't tell Mom. It sounds exactly like him because it was built from his voice.

Voice cloning tools often need only a short clip. A birthday video, a voicemail greeting or a TikTok is enough.

Warning signs of an AI voice scam

How to set up a family safe word

  1. Pick it in person. Not over text, email or social media. Those can be read.
  2. Make it odd. Not a pet's name or a street. Something nobody could guess from your Facebook. Two unrelated words work well.
  3. Tell everyone who might call for help. Kids, parents, grandparents.
  4. Practice the rule. Any emergency money request gets "what's our word?" No word, no money.
  5. Change it if it's ever used. A used word might have been overheard.

The FBI recommended exactly this in its December 2024 warning about AI-generated fraud: create a secret word or phrase with your family to verify identity.

Watchman's Family Safe Word shield generates a word that's hard to guess and walks you through sharing it the right way.

Other AI scams to watch for

Text and email scams got better too. The grammar is perfect now, so bad spelling isn't a tell anymore. Watch for urgency, a link you didn't ask for, and anyone asking you to move money. If you're not sure, paste the message into Watchman's Scam Decoder. It checks it on your Mac and tells you why it looks safe or not.

Questions

How do scammers get someone's voice?

From public videos, voicemail greetings, podcasts and social media clips. A few seconds of clear speech is often enough.

Can a safe word be hacked?

Only if it's written down somewhere a scammer can read, or guessed from public information. Choose it in person and keep it off your phone.

What should I do if I already sent money?

Call your bank or the payment company right away, then report it at ic3.gov and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
